Court audience with Nehemiah
· Shushan Palace, Susa, Khuzestan, Iran

Wikimedia Commons · CC0 1.0 Universal Public Domain Dedication · file In Artaxerxes' twentieth regnal year, Nehemiah served wine to the king and requested leave to rebuild Jerusalem. The narrative first places Nehemiah at Shushan palace and identifies him as the king's cupbearer, establishing the royal court setting at Susa. The conventional identification is Artaxerxes I; 445 BC is the usual conversion of his twentieth regnal year, though ancient regnal-calendar reconstruction is not fully uniform.
