  1. Settlement at Ladoga

The Hypatian version of the Primary Chronicle places Rurik's initial settlement at Ladoga after the Varangian invitation. This is one of the principal but conflicting chronicle accounts of his first seat. The Primary Chronicle tradition conventionally places the invitation in 862, but its recensions disagree: the Laurentian text instead places Rurik initially at Novgorod. Presence is chronicle-attested, not independently contemporary evidence.

  2. Move to Novgorod

    · Ryurikovo Gorodishche, Veliky Novgorod, Russia

In the Hypatian recension, after the deaths of Sineus and Truvor two years after the Ladoga settlement, Rurik comes to the Ilmen–Volkhov area, founds Novgorod, and settles there as prince. The 864 date is calculated from the recension's 862 setting and its statement that this occurred two years later. Coordinate marks Ryurikovo Gorodishche, the ninth-century settlement conventionally associated with chronicle-era Novgorod; the exact identification remains uncertain.

  3. Death at Novgorod

    · Novgorod (represented by Ryurikovo Gorodishche), Veliky Novgorod, Russia

The conventional chronicle-based chronology places Rurik's death at Novgorod, ending the reign traditionally dated from 862 to 879. Rurik's historicity and the chronology are disputed. The coordinate is a representative point for chronicle-era Novgorod, not a documented death site.
