After the Neue Rheinische Zeitung ceased publication, Engels travelled with Marx through Frankfurt and the insurgent regions; they reached Bingen in late May before Engels returned to the Palatinate to fight. Bingen is in present-day Rhineland-Palatinate; the cited historical note calls it Hesse.
